Fear had a way of locking doors
of closing hearts
That first Easter evening, the disciples huddled together
Their hope buried like their Lord
And then - he was there! Nothing could keep him out.
"Peace be with you."
Not a rebuke
Not a sigh of disappointment
Just peace
And when he showed them his hands, his side
What did they feel? Shock? Wonder? Or something else?
A joy beyond their dreams
"As the Father sent me, I’m sending you."
It wasn’t just his presence
It was a calling
I’m sending you
Go
One person was missing that night
Thomas
But let’s not call him Doubting Thomas, as many do
No, he simply needed to hold on to hope
By being close
Close enough to know it was real
That he was real
Who could blame Thomas?
Hope is fragile, even at the best of times
But Jesus came back.
"Look at my hands. Come near."
No condemnation – just an open invitation
A warm welcome
A gracious presence that led to an explosion of praise
"My Lord and my God."
And then those quiet, world-shaking words:
"Blessed are those who believe without seeing."
That’s us, isn’t it?
We never stood in that locked room 2000 years ago
But still we are drawn to him
We wrestle with questions
Take faltering steps
But still we are drawn to him
And when fear locks the door of our lives
Shuts the window of our hearts
Blocks the pathway to hope
Jesus meets us
We are held and known
And that - that is joy
