Symmetry in Music ep. 1 - The Tritone on Guitar

Описание к видео Symmetry in Music ep. 1 - The Tritone on Guitar

There is a beautiful symmetry to music and in this mini-series of lessons, we're going to explore three examples that you need to know about. To do this we're going to see how you can split an octave into two, three, or four equal parts and learn about the intervals and chords this process creates. (Full series playlist - https://t.ly/EdMm5)

In this first lesson, we're looking at splitting the octave into two. The octave of 12 frets can be split into two identical intervals, each of 6 frets...three whole steps… hence a tri-tone (three tones -‘tone’ is the alternative name for a whole step).

The tritone (or devil's tritone) is commonly labeled as a diminished fifth, the famous 'diabolus in musica' - the devil in music. The perfect fifth of the major scale (5) is flattened by one fret, making it a ‘diminished’ fifth (♭5) (‘perfect’ intervals flatten to ‘diminished’ intervals). You will identify the tritone as the diminished fifth when it spans five musical alphabet letters.

It can also be considered in a different context as an augmented fourth. The perfect fourth of the major scale (4) is sharpened by one fret, making it an ‘augmented’ fourth (♯4) (‘perfect’ intervals sharpen to ‘augmented’ intervals). As a chord extension, you will see this identified as a ♯11. The tritone will be identified as an augmented fourth when the interval spans four musical alphabet letters

The tritone is considered a symmetrical interval as it splits the musical octave perfectly in half. The tritone spans six frets horizontally on a single string. Across a string pair, the tritone is found one fret higher on the string physically below. That shape is raised by one fret between strings 3(G) and 2(B) (always the exception!).
