ARNHEM LAND - The Way Overland - Episode 8

We’re heading North again! The drive from Alice Springs to anywhere takes awhile. Our first stop is Mataranka which is just over 1000km from Alice, to spend a couple of days enjoying being back in the water in the thermal pool as well as the more natural setting of Bitter Springs.

About an hour up the road is Katherine, where we’ll stock up on the essentials and get our permits for Arnhem Land.

The drive from Katherine to Nhulunbuy, the region’s service hub in East Arnhem Land, is 730km which was quite a nice drive. We were surprised to see how developed the town is which we discovered that it was established to service a mine which opened in the 60’s.

It’s been about 5000km since we’ve seen the ocean and it is so good to hear the waves again. Unfortunately though, it’s not recommended to go swimming here as the water is inhabited by saltwater crocs. What a tease! Though we did manage to find some rock holes to cool off in.

East Arnhem Land is known to be one of the best fishing destinations in Australia with fish species including Barra, Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Golden Snapper and Queenfish. We threw the line in whenever we could though unfortunately for us we couldn’t catch anything that was worth keeping, perhaps we’ll blame it on not having a boat…
