German Benedictine abbess Hildegard von Bingen was a "Renaissance man" of her time. She was not only a composer, but also a well known writer and philosopher. Her musical and literary works often reflect her thoughts about chastity, poverty, and obedience.Hildegard's music is known for its wide vocal ranges (usually more than an octave), large leaps, and ornate melodies. She often begins her music with an open fifth interval, as you will hear in O frondens virga.

Edited by William T. Flynn, O frondens virga features the plainchant in organum form, with a few people singing an added voice (a fourth above and a fifth below) against the melody.
