Polar V650 GPS Bike Computer with GPS Mapping. Performance Monitoring & Navigation for £150 / $200

Garmin Edge models have dominated the market in GPS Bike Computers for many years now. That is a position they deserve to hold as their products are innovative, feature packed and appeal to all levels of cyclist from recreational (Edge 25) to Performance Elite (Edge 520) and combination performance + navigation (Edge 820 / Edge 1030). However, it's nice to see a company prepared to challenge the market leaders.

That's what Polar have done with the Polar V650 GPS Bike Computer. A large full colour display gives access to all the normal fitness metrics including Power, Heart Rate, Cadence, Speed & Distance (when paired with compatible accessories) ... and FREE Maps. The Polar V650 can be set up with a 450 x 450km square map easily downloaded directly in to the device. I have tested it with the SE of England, Northern France and Southern Spain. Brilliant.

Note - it does not give post code look up or direct turn by turn navigation like an Edge 820. However, you can follow a ROUTE on the map, like you would follow a course drawn on a paper map. You do get notified when you deviate off route. I have used it extensively and can highly recommend it to people looking for an alternative to paper maps. What you get real time is a marker on the map showing exactly where you are and which way you're travelling.
