Teen explored this forest in search for a really large rare flower which is called corpse flower because of its smell when it starts decomposing. The smell is not different from a decomposing meat - so stinky that anyone may think it's from a dead big animal. Will he be able to find it?

Known as Elephant Foot Yam, Amorphophallus paeoniifolius, is also known as elephant yam, whitespot giant arum, stinky flower, stinky lily and called "butonlakay" by the locals in this area where we searched. It is closely related to a rare flower, rafflesia, dubbed as the largest flower in the world, because both flowers share common features. Aside from being large, both are stinky and so both are called corpse flowers.

No one, in this community, wants seeing this plant around. If farmers see it in a nearby forest, they will probably cut it down to prevent it from proliferating. No one wants to be distracted by the disturbing putrid smell of the flower after it bloomed. Imagine walking through the grassy trails under the scourging heat of the sun, gasping for breathe and the air that you sniff is the abhorrently stinking smell of this corpse flower.

Unknown to the people of the community where we searched for this very large flower, this plant has medical and nutritional values. It's medical uses include:

cure for bronchitis, asthma, abdominal pain, emesis, dysentery and other similar illnesses

treatment for rectal polyps and condyloma

ash from its tuber is an ingredient for hemorrhoids

also used for enlargement of the spleen and elephantiasis.

The above-enumerated uses are not in any way prescriptions; sources are from traditional and alternative medical practices of communities who believe this plant is useful for treating, curing or alleviating these medical conditions.

For its nutritional value, it is rich in vitamins, proteins, iron and other minerals. It is also believed that it has chemicals that helps in lowering cholesterol. Moreover, it also contains omega 3 fatty acids. Of course, it is rich in fibers.

See? Not only is this plant interesting for its really large flower that stinks like corpse but more importantly for its medical and nutritional values.

This teen is so grateful to his mom, a local of the town, Paracelis, Mountain Province, Philippines, where this flower wildly grows, for mentioning this unusual flower and for accompanying him, in his journey in finding it. According to her, this flower usually blooms in the month of May. Fortunately, there are late bloomers allowing him to find some. Moreover, he is also very thankful to his grandfather for cutting off the grasses and bushes, clearing his path during his search.
