Lateral Earth Pressure At Rest

This video investigates the lateral earth pressure at rest. When constructing retaining structures the soil will exert pressure on the structure. The water table will also exert pressure on the retaining structure if present.

Being able to determine the magnitude of the earth's pressure is crucial to ensure a safe design. However, the at-rest earth pressure won't result in failure, since the at-rest scenario is an ideal pre-failure scenario. This is because the soil needs to move when failing to develop the failure mechanism.
