Researchers at UC Santa Barbara have developed a breakthrough display technology that creates graphics you can both see and physically touch. The new “optotactile” system uses tiny pixels that rise from the screen surface when illuminated by a low-power scanning laser. Each pixel contains an air cavity and a thin graphite film that heats up when hit by light. As the air expands, the pixel pops outward, creating a bump that your fingers can feel.

The project was led by researcher Max Linnander in the RE Touch Lab of Professor Yon Visell. After nearly a year of theory, simulations, and failed prototypes, the team achieved a major breakthrough in late 2022 when a single pixel successfully produced a distinct tactile pulse using only flashes of light.

Because the system uses light for both power and control, the display requires no wiring inside the pixel layer and can scale to thousands of pixels. Users in tests could accurately feel individual points, moving shapes, and tactile patterns.

This technology, published in Science Robotics, could lead to touchscreens that mimic real buttons, tactile e-books, accessible interfaces, and immersive mixed-reality surfaces where anything you can see, you can also feel.
