De basterdzandloopkever is een kever uit de loopkevers (Carabidae) familie, geslacht Zandloopkevers (Cicindela). De soort wordt 14 tot 20 mm lang en komt voor in Nederland, Belgie en Duitsland. Het is een van de 5 a 6 soorten die in Nederland voorkomen. Zowel de volwassen kever als de larve zijn uitgerust met grote kaken, en het zijn felle rovers. De kever verkent al lopend en vliegend de bodem en grijpt alles wat hij aankan, vooral mieren en andere insecten. De larve wacht in een gaatje in de grond op passerende prooi. De basterdzandloopkever is te vinden op een kale of spaarzaam begroeide zanderige bodem, vooral op droge, warme plaatsen als zandpaden in naald- of gemengd bos en zandverstuivingen.

The species grows to 14 to 20 mm long and can be found in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. It is one of the 5 or 6 species that occur in the Netherlands. Both the adult beetle and the larva are equipped with large jaws, and they are fierce predators. The beetle explores the ground by walking and flying and grabs everything it can handle, especially ants and other insects. The larva waits in a hole in the ground for passing prey. Cicindela hybrida can be found on bare or sparsely vegetated sandy soil, especially in dry, warm places such as sandy paths in coniferous or mixed forests and sand drifts.
