Water is the limiting factor for food production in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, especially in areas where rain-fed agriculture dominates. In these areas, land-based rainwater harvesting can be used to enhance crop yields. These systems can also be used for stormwater management and flood control in areas with a high and unpredictable rainfall rate. Additionally, they can be applied as an erosion control mechanism.

RUVIVAL - Sustainable Rural Development and highly productive New Towns is concerned with restoring degraded areas and creating new not just inhabitable, but liveable spaces. It is an e-learning project of the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) in cooperation with the Hamburg Open Online University (HOOU).
