Here’s what you should consider before moving to the DMV area.

It’s springtime in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area, and this beautiful time of year is when many people decide to move. If you’re coming into the DMV area or moving within it, there are five things you’ll want to think about:

1. Consider why you’re moving. If you’re moving for work, think about how long your commute will be. In some areas, it could be an hour or longer, so you’ll want to consider whether this fits into your schedule. Try driving it in the morning and evening to see what rush hour will be like—be aware that 15 miles could mean an hour in the worst traffic.

2. Are you looking for more land and space? If you need a bigger home and more space to live in, it’s best to live outside the city. D.C. has little land, so it’s hard to find a large property unless you have a budget in the millions. Instead, look in Virginia or Maryland to find homes that better fit your needs.

3. Are you looking for new construction? If you are, you should definitely look outside of the D.C. area. Land is a premium in D.C., but Maryland and Virginia have plenty of planned neighborhoods and new construction homes.

4. Consider local entertainment and restaurants. Over the past few years, D.C. has put itself on the map as a popular food destination. This means there are many fantastic and locally owned restaurants for you to sample.

5. Consider your parking options. If you have a car, you need to think about where you’ll be able to park. Like land and space, parking is another commodity in the D.C. area. If you buy a condo with parking space, plan on paying a little more each month. Renting a space could range from $150 to $250 monthly.
