Microsoft Excel Tutorial: How to Sort When You Have No Headers.

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In today's episode, we're going to tackle a common issue when sorting data in Excel. Our viewer, Jeffrey, has sent in a file where he wants to sort the data in descending order. However, when he clicks the Z to A button, the first row is being treated as a header and stays at the top. What's going on here?

Well, it turns out that the tiny little row above the data, which is often used to make things look good, is causing the problem. But don't worry, there's an easy workaround for this. Instead of using the A to Z or Z to A buttons, we can go into the Sort dialog and uncheck the box for "My data has headers". Then, we can sort by column A and choose to sort Z to A. This successfully sorts the data to the bottom, without the header row causing any issues.

It's important to note that this workaround will only work if your data is set up correctly with one header row and no blanks in between. If you have something special, like Jeffrey's blank row for aesthetic purposes, then you will need to go into the Sort dialog and specify that your data does not have headers. But don't worry, it's still possible to sort through your data with this method. So, whether you have a simple data set or something more complex, you now have the tools to easily sort your data in Excel.
