When a loved-one has late-stage dementia. Admittedly, not a pleasant situation for anyone involved, but if, like me, you believe that we live on in the memories of others, then this song is about the small amount of comfort such a belief can provide.
When I wrote this one, I very much had in mind a wistful ballad. Perhaps a Joni Mitchell female vocal and acoustic guitar, or a gentle jazz ballad. And I did versions like that, and I like them very much. But one of the joys (and I mean than in a very real sense as I actually find the process joyous) is generating songs in different genres. I've had a great time doing "metal" songs in a jazz ballad style, and I did a version of this song in an "aggressive" metalcore style. Oddly, I find it just as moving in this version as I do in the other seemingly more appropriate versions. Like it or hate it, your feedback is always welcome.

[Verse 1]
You sit by the window, lost in the haze,
Eyes on the garden, but miles away.
I speak your name softly, it drifts through the air,
You turn with a smile, but there’s no one quite there.
[Verse 2]
Your hands still remember the shape of my own,
Though the stories they told have quietly flown.
The laughter, the dances, the plans that we made,
They’re ghosts in the corners where daylight has stayed.
[Chorus]
But love remembers, when memory fades,
It carries the colours that time can’t erase.
Though your mind is a river that’s losing its way,
Love remembers - it always stays.
[Verse 3]
Some days you’re a stranger, wearing your face,
A beautiful shell in a faraway place.
I reach for the person I knew all my years,
And find only silence, and salt in my tears.
[Verse 4]
Yet still I see flickers, brief sparks in your eyes,
A laugh from the past, a whisper that tries.
And though piece by piece you drift from my view,
The world still turns gently around what was you.
[Chorus]
But love remembers, when memory fades,
It carries the colours that time can’t erase.
Though your mind is a river that’s losing its way,
Love remembers - it always stays.
[Verse 5]
The stories you told live on in our days,
In echoes of children, in the things that they say.
Your voice in their laughter, your smile in their eyes,
You’re here in the living - love never dies.
[Verse 6]
And when I look back on the years that we knew,
The moments still shine with the warmth of you.
Though your mind may wander, and reason may stray,
The love that you gave me won’t fade away.
[Chorus]
But love remembers, when memory fades,
It carries the colours that time can’t erase.
Though your mind is a river that’s losing its way,
Love remembers - it always stays.
[Bridge]
When the mind forgets the music, the heart keeps the tune,
And echoes of yesterday linger in the room.
You taught me to live, you taught me to care,
And I’ll hold your tomorrows, though you’re not fully there.
[Final Chorus]
But love remembers, when memory fades,
It carries the colours that time can’t erase.
Though your mind is a river that’s losing its way,
Love remembers - it always stays.
