James Comey Indictment: Donald Trump Says No Revenge, But Actions Suggest Otherwise

James B. Comey, the former F.B.I. director, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly lying before Congress in September 2020. This indictment followed President Trump’s increased pressure on the Justice Department to charge Comey and others he viewed as enemies. Comey faces one count of making a false statement and one count of obstruction related to his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee five years ago.

The indictment claims that Comey falsely stated during a hearing that he had not authorized anyone at the F.B.I. to leak information about an investigation into an unnamed person. Prosecutors have been investigating whether Comey should be charged with lying to lawmakers about the F.B.I.’s investigation into Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and its potential connections to Russia. For years, Trump has criticized the Russia investigation, calling it a “witch hunt” and a “hoax.” He fired Comey in 2017 when the F.B.I. looked into whether some of Trump’s advisers colluded with the Russian government to influence the 2016 presidential election.
