Ever since military despot General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq claimed record support in a referendum on his rule, even though voting centres were visibly empty, Pakistanis have joked about 'farishtey', or angels, deciding the fate of election after election in Pakistan. The Army is confident its 'farishtey' will ensure Prime Minister Imran Khan doesn’t get a second shot at power — but flagrant rigging could have serious long-term consequences.
