On March 22, 1956, the Naga National Flag was first hoisted at 'Parashen' in Rengma area by Thungdi Chang, Commander-in-Chief of Naga Home Guard. The president of Naga National Council (NNC) A.Z. Phizo declared the formation of the Federal Republic of Nagaland in the same event. This was done in the presence of a host of dignitaries and freedom fighters.
