For Iranian-American actor, writer, and director Arian Moayed, that belief has shaped everything from his work on stage and screen to the way he builds community through art.

Known to many as Stewy Hosseini on HBO’s Succession and now in Netflix’s Nobody Wants This, Arian is also the co-founder of Waterwell, a civic-minded organization of artists and educators. Waterwell develops engrossing work that wrestles with complex civic questions in unexpected ways, across theater, education, film, and more—using story to cultivate connection and inspire real-world action.

In this talk, Arian traces his path from childhood in Iran to his family’s flight to the United States, and to the Iranian practice of Mehmoon Navazi—a radical hospitality that filled his parents’ small Chicago apartment with strangers and friends and their moving stories. That spirit shaped his idea of art as service and its power to chip away at fear, division, and indifference.
