We all know that rabbits are eating machines. They have a unique digestive system and because of this, rabbits must consume a high amount of fibre in order to keep their digestive tracts running smoothly. While rabbits are herbivores, that doesn't mean they can eat any fruits, veggies, and greens. Many seemingly harmless 'human' snacks can actually be dangerous for rabbits. It's important to be aware of what is safe for rabbits to eat and what isn't. In this video, we'll explore some of the most toxic foods you shouldn’t give to your rabbit.
Avocado - 00:32
Avocados may be healthy for humans, but they are certainly not safe for rabbits. Avocados contain persin, a compound that is found in all parts of the avocado including the skin, pit, leaves, and flesh. If a rabbit consumes enough of this compound, it can cause behavioral changes and difficulty breathing. If not properly treated, it can lead to congestive heart failure and death. If you want your rabbit to have a long and prosperous life, avoid avocados.
Rhubarb - 01:03
Rhubarb is widely used in desserts and is often found in pies and crumbles. This vegetable contains a high concentration of oxalic acid, which can be toxic if consumed in large quantities. Symptoms of toxicity include a swollen, painful mouth, decreased appetite, bloating and abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and lethargy. If you think your rabbit may have consumed too much oxalic acid, please contact a veterinarian immediately.
Chocolate - 01:33
Chocolate is dangerous to rabbits, as it contains theobromine and caffeine. These substances can be harmful to our furry little friends. The darker the chocolate, the higher the amount of theobromine and caffeine and the higher the chance of toxicity. Toxicity symptoms include diarrhea, restlessness, trembling, breathlessness, squirming or difficulty getting comfortable, elevated heart rate, and high temperature, like fever. Without treatment, chocolate toxicity can be fatal.
Meat, Eggs, Dairy - 02:06
As herbivores, rabbits should never be given meat, eggs or dairy. Their digestive system is designed to break down low-fat, high-fiber foods, and cannot properly process animal protein. This may come as a surprise to some, but it is important to remember when caring for a rabbit. For these reasons, it is best to avoid feeding your rabbit any product that contain meat, eggs, dairy, or other animal-derived proteins.
Iceberg lettuce - 02:34
It may come as a surprise, but dark, leafy lettuces are much better for rabbits than light-colored lettuces like iceberg. Iceberg lettuce contains a chemical called lactucarium that can be harmful to rabbits if consumed in large quantities. Additionally, iceberg lettuce is low in nutrients and will not provide any nutritional value to a rabbit’s diet. For these reasons, it is best to be avoided.
Potatoes - 03:02
While not as toxic as other foods on this video, potatoes are not always safe for rabbits. Raw potatoes especially, should not be consumed by your furry friends, as they contain a toxic alkaloid called solanine. This can lead to decreased appetite, digestive problems, abdominal pain, and lethargy in rabbits. Furthermore, potatoes are calorically dense and high in starch, which can cause serious health problems for rabbits. If you want a healthy furry friend, avoid potatoes altogether.
Garlic, onions and leeks - 03:35
Garlic, onions and leeks are all members of the allium family. These foods are all known to be toxic to rabbits and other small animals, if consumed in high amounts. Symptoms of allium toxicity in rabbits can include weakness, abdominal pain, difficulty breathing and anaemia. If you think your rabbit shows signs of allium toxicity, please contact a veterinarian immediately.
