~ CELEBRATING MOTHER AND SON ~
Margaret Njoki Njoroge and his first born son Mwangi Njoroge formed a gospel music duo, Mother and Son.

The family started off in Mumias in Western Kenya where the family bread winner was a laborer at Mumias Sugar Company.
'Mwangi Baba' , the son, was born there and his first interaction as a kid was with the Luhya community in school and in the community. He claims to speak better luhya than kikuyu.

Mwangi "Gavana jomo ithaga riene" started singing in the Full Gospel Church alongside his mother long before they recorded music.It was Mwangis initiative that had their music recorded and the account of how he came to Nairobi looking for a producer is inspiring.
Having cleaned the car of a Mumias Sugar Company manager for several days , he had enough money for fare to an unknown Nairobi. He fell in the hands of a God send mkokoteni man who graciously showed him around River Road studios. They would visit Albert Gacheru Wamaitus studio, Kimani Thomas's, and Kassangas. His breakthroughs came after meeting Joseph Kamaru. After listening and coaching Son on vocals he gave him Ksh 2000 to go to Mumias and bring Mother for recording. He would later produce their first album which did very well.
Mother had a unique voice and Son was a talented vocalist too. Infact in Jomo Kenyatta Secondary School in Nakuru, Mwangi was nicknamed Munishi, a famous gospel artist, because he would imitate his songs word for word and his intonation too.

Joseph Kamaru introduced the duo to one Elizabeth Omollo of KBC who gave them the name Mother and Son.

Mother and Son received immense success and their music was played across radio and TV stations, churches, crusades and entertainment joints. Fame and fortune have its own share of problems and the duo had ideological differences. For instance when KBL was marketing Malta Guinness brand, Son was headhunted to do a TV commercial. Mother bluntly refused and the role was given to Esther Wahome of Kuna Dawa. Being a staunch believer Mother was closely monitoring Sons behaviour and would admonish him every time she thought he was loosing track. Infact the songs Iria na Uuki and Mathaa ma Kiroko were done by Mother and Elijah Miller after the original Mother and Son had a temporary musical break up.

From Mumias, the family relocated to Subukia where they now call home.
Mother, Margaret Njoki Njoroge, passed on in 2016 and is survived by her husband Mr Njoroge, children and grandchildren.
Son carries on with Mother's legacy and is a widely travelled man. He has toured South Africa and Germany.

Today Son, in his early 50s, is the lead actor in Ithaga Riene, a popular TV show where he plays the role of Governor Jomo. He is also a very hilarious MC and Event Moderator, Brand Strategist and Autism Awareness Champion.
