Broken Wings: Myrna Herzog, Günter Krause, a viol broken at Alitalia's flight

When Günter Krause, the composer, arranger, guitarist/keyboards player and singer of German progressive rock band Rufus Zuphall saw the photos of Myrna Herzog’s Lewis antique viol broken at an Alitalia flight, it touched his heart.

Although they did not know each other and never met, he wrote for her a moving piece, Broken Wings, in three parts: 1. Flying; 2. Broken Lewis; 3. A blue state of mind

The piece expresses the many different emotions felt by a musician who has his/her instrument broken, and ends in a soothing manner, like a friends’ embrace.

In the meantime, Alitalia behaved with great fairness, and took full responsibility of the accident, and of all the costs implied in the repair of the viol.

The broken viol is one of two twin viols by the great British maker Edward Lewis (Lewis II). Myrna Herzog performs Krause's piece on the other twin (Lewis I).

The two viols, according to dendrochronology, have been made from wood from the same tree, cut around 1665. Both of them have amazing voices, and we are confident that Lewis II, under the magic care of Shlomo Moyal, will soon recover its power to sing, and will take part of PHOENIX 20th concert season: https://www.phoenixearlymusic.com/ind...
