On April 10, 2018, 16-year-old Kyle Plush drove himself to school and parked in the lot at Seven Hills School in Cincinnati, Ohio. While reaching into the backseat of his 2004 Honda Odyssey to retrieve tennis gear, the third-row seat flipped backward and trapped him. Crushed upside-down between the seat and the floor, Kyle was unable to free himself. With his phone in his pocket, he made two desperate 911 calls using Siri, clearly explaining where he was and that he feared he was going to die.

Despite the precise details he gave—his age, the make and model of the van, and his exact location—emergency responders failed to find him. A deputy arrived and never exited their cruiser, and the dispatcher handling the second call didn’t relay the urgency. Kyle’s father would later be the one to discover his lifeless body nearly six hours later. The teen had suffocated to death just feet from the school building.

Kyle’s death led to widespread criticism of the 911 system and emergency response protocol. Multiple investigations were launched, and both dispatch and police department procedures were overhauled. His family sued the city, alleging gross negligence, and a settlement was reached in 2023. His voice was recorded and preserved in both 911 calls, which were later made public.
