Over 16,000 people were involved in road traffic accidents across the country in the first quarter of 2018, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

This shows an increase from the 15,696 people that were involved in accidents in the fourth quarter of 2017.

The accidents resulted in the death of 1,292 people with the most deaths happening on the roads of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Of the 3,864 vehicles involved in the road crashes, commercial vehicles contributed to a larger percentage of the crashes.

Breakdown:
Commercial (2,330) - 60.3%
Private (1,480) - 38.30%
Diplomatic - (2) - 0.05%
Government (52) 1.35%

Between January and March, over 50.8% of road accidents were caused by speed violations,

Tyre burst and dangerous driving contributed over 16% while the rest were due to other causative factors.

Bayelsa roads were deemed the safest in the country, with just four crashes in the first quarter of 2018.

The report from the NBS also indicates that Lagos accounted for 26% of the 223,107 driver’s licences issued in the country.
