SLPs Emily Homer and Flora Farley talk about how they contribute to student achievement.

TRANSCRIPT:
Hi. I'm Emily Homer and I am the coordinator of speech and language services in Covington, Louisiana. And the way that I contribute to student success in the classroom is in a more indirect capacity. I work on program development and working directly with the speech pathologists in the school setting to help them do their jobs better and to ultimately affect learning in the classroom. One of the things we're doing that am very excited about is that we're addressing speech and language disorders in the daycare centers. And at the same time that we're doing that, we have prepared professional development modules that we train those daycare teachers to be more effective and to stimulate pre-emergent language skills and literacy skills in the daycares. And as a result, I think we're going to get children that are better prepared for the public school setting, the preschool, and the kindergarten classes.

My name is Flora Farley. I'm a school-based SLP and I contribute to student achievement by providing training for the classroom teachers on how to recognize students that are struggling with the language that's complex for them. And I also give them some strategies to use with them in the classroom. And also, some of my students are looking forward to college career. And to support that, I help them with their academic vocabulary and giving them strategies on how to interact with other people in various environments.
