Have you ever gone to take a selfie and felt your reflection on the screen looked completely normal, but something about the actual photo was off? Here are 3 reasons why our selfies look weird to us…

1. All living objects are constantly in motion, and most of us are used to seeing our reflections in motion. Photos take a 3D moving object and flatten them into a 2D still.

2. The Mere Exposure effect in psychology states the more we see something, the more we tend to prefer it. When we see ourselves in the mirror, we are seeing a flipped version of ourselves. Since none of our faces are perfectly symmetrical (and due to the Mere Exposure effect, we’ve grown partial to our own asymmetry) seeing the flipped version of ourselves can be rather jarring.

3. Our phones are over processing our images. Each make and model of phone has a different means of processing images after they’ve been taken, which can make us look different.
