Fang Cheng Bao Tai 7 – China’s Luxury SUV That Looks Like a Defender, Lexus, and G-Wagon Combined!
---
In the ever-evolving world of SUV design, originality often takes a back seat to influence—and sometimes, influence turns into imitation. Enter the Fang Cheng Bao Tai 7, the latest SUV from BYD’s luxury brand, and one that’s sure to stir up debate. Recently unveiled through China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Tai 7 is grabbing attention for all the wrong—and some of the right—reasons.
At first glance, you’ll notice a familiar silhouette. That’s because the Tai 7 bears a striking resemblance to the Land Rover Defender. From the boxy bodywork to the rugged front fascia, this SUV wears its inspiration on its sleeve. The front end mimics the Defender’s shape closely, though instead of circular headlights, Fang Cheng Bao has opted for modern split lighting units, giving it a slightly different identity.
From the side, the Tai 7 continues its mashup of global luxury design, featuring angular fender flares and bulging body panels reminiscent of the Lexus GX. Even the small ‘side plate’—a controversial Defender design cue—makes an appearance here, though thankfully in a more subdued form. At the rear, the design echoes Mercedes’ G-Class EV, with a squared-off spare wheel carrier and contrasting silver bumper accents.
Underneath the eye-catching exterior is a plug-in hybrid powertrain made up of a 1.5-liter engine producing 154 hp and an electric motor pushing out 268 hp. Combined, they drive this 4,916-pound SUV to a top speed of 118 mph, offering a blend of performance and efficiency.
In terms of dimensions, the Tai 7 is no small contender. It measures nearly 197 inches long, over 78 inches wide, and stands 73.4 inches tall—making it slightly shorter than a Defender 130 but longer than the Defender 110. It’s designed to fit squarely in the large SUV category, with available 18- and 19-inch wheels to complete the aggressive look.
The Tai 7 is expected to debut later this year, with an estimated starting price of just ¥300,000—under $42,000 USD. That’s an impressively low price for an SUV that blends styling from three premium off-road legends. Whether it wins over fans or raises eyebrows, the Tai 7 is proof that China’s automotive scene is full of bold moves.
