On 15 April 1998, Jack Duckworth went to his doctor and so would begin Jack Quits Smoking. Remarkably, this would feature in the next 13 episodes and would conclude, three weeks later, on 8 May 1998 after taking up 80 minutes of screentime.

During this story, Jack would wager his success with Alec Gilroy, be covered in nicotine patches, undergo hypnosis therapy, adopt the persona of 'Lusty' Jack Johnson, threaten to buy a horse, get history wrong, and tuck into a delicious pie.

This story was running while Jim is pushed from scaffolding by Steve, Nick used Leanne to get to the man who killed his dad, and Zoe's baby died.
