Artist Bonnie Devine and her assistant Mariah Meawasige talk about the mural they are working on at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. The project began as a commemoration of the old Carrying Place portage that once ran along the Humber River from Lake Ontario to Lake Simcoe and was a vital passage from southern Ontario to Georgian Bay and the upper Great Lakes. As their work developed, the artists began to consider the role of the Carrying Place in the deeper history and enduring legacy of Indigenous economic, political, and cultural exchange in Southern Ontario.
