Thirty years ago, Pete Nelson built his very first “grown-up” treehouse high in the canopy of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. It was 1992, Pete was a new father, and with the help of friends, he brought to life a whimsical cedar-shingled hideaway that helped launch his career as the treehouse guy.

Fast forward three decades this beloved treehouse was still standing strong but in need of some serious TLC. Pete returned with our crew (including his now grown son, Charlie) to restore it into a writer’s retreat. From rebuilding the bridge and repairing split walls to adding handcrafted desks and finally installing the original door hardware after 30 years, this “tree-hab” was a true full-circle moment.
