The Archaeological Park of Neapolis is a natural area full of archaeological finds belonging to several periods of Syracusan history. For the quantity and relevance of its monuments it is considered one of the most important archaeological areas of Sicily, as well as among the largest in the Mediterranean. The park, located in the district of Neapolis of Syracuse, corresponds to a small part of the ancient quarter of Syracuse in Greek (Siceliota) and Roman times, Neapolis (from the Greek "Νεά πολις" "New Town"), contains most of the Syracusan monuments survived. it was made by the Superintendency of Eastern Sicily (Superintendent Luigi Bernabò Brea) with the funds of the Cassa for midday between 1952 and 1955. The great outcropping monuments had already been the subject of excavations by D. Lo Faso duke of Serradifalco (published in 1840) and subsequently by two well-known archaeologists Paolo Orsi and Luigi Bernabò Brea. The park was "designed" by V. Cabianca who inserted it into the city plan of Syracuse and was built with the intention of enclosing in a single protected site all the monuments that were in that area, thus avoiding that they could one day be found in danger due to urban expansion, which, moreover, has pushed itself to the edges of the area with endless building constructions. From the fifties to the eighties the city of Syracuse underwent a remarkable development of the population (from 66,000 to 117,000 inhabitants) and, with such an accelerated demographic increase, within just three decades also the urban fabric gradually changed and many areas that once they were just the countryside became densely built up. Numerous new homes were built on necropolis, thermal baths, temples and ancient streets. Many monuments of the ancient city were therefore submerged by the new building. This was not the case for the monuments inside the Parco della Neapolis which, being reciting and therefore inhibiting any type of construction within its perimeter, were thus safeguarded by the expansion of the city. This park, in addition to the archaeological remains, has protected the numerous trees and therefore the delicate flora of the area that together with the architecture make up the largest urban green area of ​​Syracuse.
