SEGA, much like Nintendo, has many characters.
Some are elegant like NiGHTS, some are edgy like most of the cast from Shenmue or Yakuza, while others are adorable like Billy Hatcher or Ristar.
So why, then, does SEGA only focus on Sonic, their golden boy? Have they forgotten that their other IPs exist? Do they even care? Or do they even know that people want them to take a break from Sonic for a while?
Perhaps, it could be a curse that they live with after a grave mistake they committed, for you see, they weren't always like this.
In the year of our Lord 1986, SEGA released a platform game for the SEGA Master System, known in Japan as the Mark III. It was cute, charming, and it managed to be amazing without the speed Sonic had.
It was called "Alex Kidd in Miracle World", and SEGA crowned the titular Alex Kidd their mascot after the game's success.
Alex had 6 games - Each one more unique from the last. And everything was beautiful... Well, that was, until the summer of 1991.
In that timeframe, SEGA came out with the first Sonic game, effectively ditching Alex and replacing him with Sonic as their mascot. Sonic himself was everything Alex wasn't - He was cool, edgy, and above all else, he was fast. Like... Really fast.
For decades that felt like thousands upon thousands of eternities, Alex was left alone to rot, and they treated Sonic like their one true son.
What happened afterward? SEGA began to lose traction with the SEGA Saturn and eventually dipped out of the console business after the discontinuation of the Dreamcast in 2001, ultimately ending their golden years and staying as a third party developer.
Now, why was this?
Well, some might say that it was because of the PS2. Others might say that it was because of the fallout from the failure of the SEGA Saturn. And a good few might tell you that it's because SEGA of Japan and SEGA of America kept disagreeing on pretty much everything.
But what if I told you that neither of those reasons that I had just given were the actual reason?
Well, my theory is that when SEGA replaced Alex with Sonic, fate was furious with SEGA for ditching their firstborn, so in retaliation, it cursed them with years of bad luck ahead of them, effectively meaning that SEGA got the karmic justice they deserved and that it wasn't just corporate messes being made.
So with all this in mind, think about it as you listen to this artistic piano interpretation of the main theme from Alex Kidd in Miracle World that I made, and maybe, just maybe, you'll realize that it wasn't corporate mistakes that made SEGA fall, but rather, it was karmic justice behind the scenes...
