Leopold Stokowski was not only one of the great 20th Century Maestros but also a highly accomplished arranger. Top of the list of composers whose music he orchestrated was Johann Sebastian Bach, who himself was an inveterate arranger, with many of his compositions being transcriptions of works by Vivaldi, Telemann, Couperin, Corelli, Albinoni and many others.

The most famous of Stokowski's Bach transcriptions is the Toccata and Fugue in D minor. It was a best-selling 78rpm disc made with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1927 and its fame was enhanced even more when they featured it as the opening item in Walt Disney's classic movie "Fantasia" in 1940. Another of Bach's great organ pieces which Stokowski transcribed was the mighty Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor. In this excerpt we hear the final pages, played by the London Symphony Orchestra at one of Stokowski's Proms concerts in 1963. It comes from the 6CD ICA Classics Vol. 2 set featuring many BBC broadcasts from his later years and was the 'overture' to the Proms Premiere of Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony.
