Our third ask is for the Government to accelerate new train orders, fleet refurbishments and low carbon network upgrades.

To secure jobs, maximise immediate economic benefit and reduce carbon across the network, we need a plausible, deliverable and affordable strategy of accelerating new train orders and decarbonising rail. This strategy will lead to a reduced-cost railway, as new battery electric rolling stock is cheaper and easier to maintain and run, whilst also increasing ridership through an improved passenger experience.

We need leadership from Government to spur on innovation and adoption of new technologies in the design and application of batteries and charging infrastructure for trains. RIA's "plan of thirds" to deliver a lower cost, higher performing net zero railway will lead to a contribution to the reduction in long-term energy usage, and result in rail continuing to be a cleaner, more sustainable mode of transport.
