Hola! Continuing the script to screen series this quarter, where we take a look at the differences and similarities between a film’s script and its scene. It’s always so interesting to see a writer’s words come to life. And to start us off, we’ll dive deep into the final scene of the psychological thriller “Shutter Island” (2010). Spoilers to follow, though this is an older movie, so I assume it’s safe to say if you’re studying it with this video, you’ve already seen it!

In general, the script matches up with the movie scene. The overall idea is there; Andrew (note how the script keeps his name ambiguous as Teddy/Andrew) calls Sheehan by his fantasy name “Chuck.” But then Andrew/Teddy asks Sheehan/Chuck if it’s better to die as a good man than to live as a monster, so now the audience is left to wonder if Andrew/Teddy is still living in his delusional life. I think that the line is meant to tell us exactly what Andrew is thinking. He doesn’t want to live in a world where he has murdered his wife and his kids are dead, so he will accept his fantasy life of Teddy over his real one of Andrew. Sheehan calls out after him because at this point he has realized what Andrew is doing. The experiment did work, but Andrew/Teddy will not live his life as Andrew. He will remain playing the role of Teddy, and sacrifice his well-being with the drugs he knows they will force on him instead.

Great movie, and great ending!
