In this 5th grade art project, students create a Navajo-inspired paper rug while exploring pattern, color, and negative space.

Students begin with a large sheet of paper in yellow, beige, gray, red, or orange. They choose four strips of paper in coordinating colors (including brown, black, or white) and cut different types of lines through the center of each strip. These strips are then carefully glued onto the background paper, focusing on balance and negative space to create a woven-rug effect.

On Day 2, students use the same color palette to cut and add geometric shapes and designs, layering details to enhance their patterns and create visual interest.

On Day 3, students complete their rugs by hole-punching 10 holes along the sides and adding tassels made from three strands of yarn in matching colors. This final step gives the artwork a textured, finished look inspired by traditional rug designs.
