#Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. About 15% of patients may also experience joint inflammation called psoriatic arthritis in the course of their lives.

This joint disease can lead to severe destruction of bones, ligaments, and cartilage. The cause is inflammation of the entheses, i.e., the attachments of the ligaments, tendons, and joint capsules to the bone.

This causes inflammation within the bone, which is often accompanied by bone marrow edema. This, in turn, leads to inflammation in the synovial membrane, synovitis, which triggers erosive destruction of the bone. It is accompanied by changes in the periosteum, the "skin of the bone", which are known as proliferations or spiculae.
