Summary:

How painful is hernia surgery? One of the important reasons why patients postpone getting their hernia treated is the fear of operation and the fear of the pain after the operation. This is not an entirely baseless fear. There is a pain after operations. Operation is after all a cut on the body. However, how painful is it, which means how much the suffering will be, when do they recover, how long will it take for them to be pain free, sleep well and do their normal activities. One has to understand that the amount of pain depends on the nature of the cut. As more and more hernia operations these days are being done by using the laparoscopic technique, which does not involve big incisions and big cuts, as they are usually done with the help of small keyholes, the pain of the operations has drastically come down. This means that a majority of the patients undergoing laparoscopic hernia repairs are more or less, close to being absolutely pain free even on the first day of surgery. The next morning, when we go to see the patient, the patient is usually sitting on a chair reading a newspaper or watching the television. When it comes to open hernia repairs, when the incision is very large, we generally take adequate precautionary measures to make sure that the patient does not have excessive pain. How do we achieve that? We have various techniques to minimize the post-operative pain such as, placing an epidural catheter It is a very fine catheter that is placed in the back through which, a daily dose of pain killer is given which directly acts on the nervous system and decreases the pain. People might be familiar with the technique that is used for painless normal deliveries. We also have other techniques where, we give focused nerve blocks at the end of the operation so that the abdomen does not experience too much pain for the initial three or four days and the patient’s recovery is smooth. Generally, the pain after hernia operations are very much tolerable and the patients usually will be able to walk the next day after the surgery.
