How do we achieve that? We have various techniques to minimize the post-operative pain such as, placing an epidural catheter It is a very fine catheter that is placed in the back through which, a daily dose of pain killer is given which directly acts on the nervous system and decreases the pain. People might be familiar with the technique that is used for painless normal deliveries. We also have other techniques where, we give focused nerve blocks at the end of the operation so that the abdomen does not experience too much pain for the initial three or four days and the patient’s recovery is smooth. Generally, the pain after hernia operations are very much tolerable and the patients usually will be able to walk the next day after the surgery.
