Women leaders from three U.S.-based newsrooms talked about how they’re handling the hostile media environment under the Trump administration during a conversation this week about gender, press freedom and democracy organized by The 19th and the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY ‪@NewmarkJSchool‬

In his second term, Trump has banned the Associated Press from the Oval Office for refusing to change how it refers to the Gulf of Mexico; released restrictive rules for reporting on the Department of Defense, prompting most accredited journalists to turn in their access badges and leave the Pentagon in protest; and launched a so-called “Media Offenders" bias tracker on the official White House website.

The president has also engaged in verbal attacks against journalists. He recently called The New York Times’ Katie Rogers “ugly, inside and out” and told Catherine Lucey from Bloomberg, “Quiet. Quiet, piggy,” after she asked him a question about the Jeffrey Epstein files.

The president has directed his ire toward women reporters on multiple occasions during his political career. But these attacks have a broader impact too, according to Noor Ibrahim, deputy editor at Marie Claire, at Wednesday’s event.

“When you have a president who is publicly, boldly berating journalists, and particularly women, right now, that doesn't just affect the reporter,” Ibrahim said. “It shapes the entire environment, and whether we like it or not, others, or a lot of other people see that as permission to do the same.”
