We caught up with the legendary Willem Dafoe at the London Premiere of The Man in My Basement. He talks about stepping into the role of Anniston Bennet, a mysterious man whose arrival sparks a tense psychological game with Corey Hawkins’ character.

The film, directed by Nadia Latif, also stars Anna Diop, Jonathan Ajayi, Gershwyn Eustache Jnr., Pamela Nomvete, and Tamara Lawrance. Adapted from Walter Mosley’s acclaimed novel, it explores themes of power, race, and the haunting ghosts of the past.

The Man in My Basement is released in UK cinemas on 12 September 2025, followed by streaming on Disney+.

Plot:
In Sag Harbour, New York, Charles Blakey (Corey Hawkins) is out of work, out of luck, and on the verge of losing his ancestral home. A knock on the door from mysterious businessman Anniston Bennet (Willem Dafoe) brings a strange proposition: rent out his basement for the summer in exchange for enough money to clear his debts. Once Charles agrees, he’s pulled into a terrifying psychological game that confronts family ghosts, race, trauma, and the very roots of evil. Adapted from Walter Mosley’s acclaimed novel.
