Washing a down sleeping bag at home is simple, safe, and keeps the insulation fluffy for many years.

Just follow these easy steps:
1. Prepare the Sleeping Bag
Zip it up fully.

2. Use the Right Detergent
Down requires a special down wash (e.g., Nikwax Down Wash or Grangers Down Cleaner).
Never use regular detergent or fabric softener — they leave residues that damage loft.

3. Machine Wash – Gentle and Easy
Use a front-loading washing machine (no center agitator).
Choose cold or lukewarm water.
Select the gentle/delicate cycle - max 600 rpm/minute.
Add the correct amount of down detergent. - ca 150 ml / bag in 8 litre machine

4. Rinse Well
If your machine has an extra rinse option, use it, or wash it a second time with imprgnation detergent

5. Dry It Low temperature and Slow rotations

Drying down is the most important step, but still very simple:
Use a tumble dryer on low heat.
Add 2–3 clean tennis balls or dryer balls to break up clumps.
Expect 6 hours of drying; occasionally fluff the bag by hand.
When the bag feels completely dry, run it for another 20 minutes to make sure all moisture is gone. This restores the original loft of the down.

6. Store It Properly

Once dry:
Do not store it compressed.
Keep it in a large cotton storage sack or hang it in a wardrobe.

Finally, most people are nervous the first time, but modern down detergents and gentle washing machines make the process safe and straightforward. A good wash can completely revive the loft and warmth of your sleeping bag.
