Tanzanite Value. The range of tanzanite value, $8-450 per carat, from gemsfactory. The price of tanzanite like that of many gemstones depends on the so called Four Cs:
Color, Clarity, Carat and Cut. We'll review all the core factors starting with color.

What determines tanzanite value is color.
To make it clear how it influences the price, let's take three perfectly cut gemstones of approximately equal weight (6-8 carats) and high clarity. They only differ in color.
This is the most widespread color – bluish violet. According to various scales, it is called АА+ or Intense – the value of such a gemstone is about 180-200 dollars per carat.
The next color level is saturated blue with a violet tint. It is called ААА or Vivid. These gemstones are very popular and are often used in top jewellery. The price of well cut and clear gemstones is about 250-270 dollars per carat.
Tanzanite can have a saturated blue color with no violet tints, and it is the most valuable, about 280-330 dollars per carat. Such gemstones are very beautiful and resemble blue sapphires.
How does price depend on size?
Like most gemstones, tanzanites of same quality and color may vary in price which depends on their size. But this correlation is not that evident as that of sapphires.
For instance, these gemstones weigh 3, 7 and 12 carats and have approximately similar quality.
Their price is respectively 190, 250 and 310 dollars per carat.
Recently we've cut a 27 carat tanzanite with perfect color and clarity. This size and quality are rare, in some places it would cost more than 1000 dollars per carat. But in fact we sold it for 430 dollars per carat.
Large gemstones over 15-20 carats are not that rare at huge manufactures.
You may find the value of calibrated tanzanites on our website.
Please note that gemstones selected by size and color are always more expensive than those in mixed lots.
This is the approximate graph of well cut AAA tanzanite of perfect clarity.
Small tanzanites are very cheap, their price starts from 30 dollars per carat. But as the weight grows from 3 to 10 carats, so does the price – from 200 up to 270 dollars per carat. Tanzanites over 10 carats are much rarer, however their reasonable price should not exceed 350-450 dollars per carat. The change in gemstone color will just raise the graph or lower it.
The other two factors, cut and clarity, are extremely important, but we won't describe them in details. In this review we tell about perfectly cut and clear gemstones. Of course, the more imperfections a gemstone has (like chips, geometry faults, inclusions), the cheaper it will be.
These gemstones are very hard to sell as loose stones, they are immediately used in jewelry to hide imperfections.
We cut gemstones with inclusions to cabochons, and their price is very low, 8 dollars per carat.
Complexity of cutting process should also be mentioned. Oval is the easiest shape. Rectangular gemstones with sharp angles – octagon, cochon, princess – are the most complicated and labor consuming to produce, their price is 10-15% higher than that of oval shape.
Fresh cut gemstones have no chips or scratches. Handmade polish guarantees magnificent glow and light trick.
