Coming back once again IN FULL HD, is the Lewden die-cast
weather proof plugs & sockets! Today: 13 Amp unswitched.


Now, before I go any further into this video description, I have to
say two things about these Lewden die-cast plug and socket
videos. They are:

(1) I will not be showing all of them in one vid, like I done on the
previous channel. I have split them up into their individual
ratings and also differentiated between switched and un-
switched sockets.

(2) The plugs and sockets discussed in these Lewden die-cast
videos ARE THE OLD-STYLE, and these can be identified
by the large threaded screw on the plug and the socket, of
which, instead of being a screw thread on the new versions,
they are are a 'push-and-twist' effort.

OK then, for today's PLUGS video, we have the 13A, BS 1363
flavour of these, and accompanying the plug, is an unswitched
socket. Both are finished in gloss black.

Just like the domestic equivalent of 13A plug, they are fused to
the usual BS 1362 standard. As any plug lover on Wayne's
Electrical should know, BS 1362 fuses are available in the
following ratings: 1A, 2A, 3A, 5A, 7A, 10A and 13A. Oh yes. :D

The I.P. rating (Ingress Protection) of these is quite high. I think
the IP rating for these is something like IP67. Of course, if you
didn't know, that is NOT 'sixty-seven' but rather 'six-seven'. The
first number pertains to ingress of solids, the second number is
for ingress of liquids. There we are. Now you know. :D

Despite being as chunky, rugged and industrial-looking as they
are, these are not Ex rated (Ex rating is for electrical accessories
suited for use around explosive atmospheres/liquids/powders)

Being suited for use outdoors, and being able to withstand low-
pressure water flow being directed at them/ onto them, these
things are pretty-well glanded-up for the task, as shown in the
video.

Between the plug and the socket, residing on the plug, is a rubber
'gaiter' which, when the plug is put into the socket and the plug is
tightened onto the socket with the securing ring, (also on the plug)
the rubber gaiter is compressed between the plug and socket,
effectively keeping water out from the electrical join between the
plug and socket. When not in use, the sockets are supposed to
have their caps screwed onto the front of the socket & tightened
to keep liquids and solids out.

Being engineered the way they are, you would expect these
things to be particularly expensive, and yes they are! But,
one thing I can say on these (which is why I own an absolute
stack of them) is that they're very solid, rugged, made-to-last,
are FULLY STRIPPABLE for maintenance and clean-up and
restoration reasons.

Nothing is factory sealed, glued, welded or anything. Each and
every part can be removed, seperated, cleaned, restored,
reinstated and re-assembled. TASTY!! What I will say on that
though, is that what I have said in reference to maintenance,
does not extend to any rotary switching contact mechanisms, as
I believe that the switching contact mechanisms are supplied to
Lewden by another company.
