A significant fraction of the Upsetter’s raw musical genius during
the Black Ark’s hey-day appeared as “one-away” demos and
dub-plates. These were mainly fragile acetates, often one-of-akind.
Pressure Sounds have released many of these precious
Perry dub-plate mixes but, sadly, none forthcoming since about
2015.

This vinyl LP RW-011 is our attempt to follow up on that
dub-plate series. The tracks chosen are compiled and restored
from private collections for those who enjoy the adventure
of collecting “foundation” reggae music from the 70’s and in
particular, of hearing the unique, sometimes obscure, versions
that Lee Perry recorded at The Black Ark.

Despite the sometimes less-than-perfect sound quality, eight of the ten songs haven’t
got sufficient sound quality to get a proper release, we hope the
enthusiast finds special satisfaction.

This is not a commercial venture. Rather, the very limited
pressing is intended for private use only and to ensure no
financial harm to the original artists and producers. We hope
our release draws additional attention to and enthusiasm for the
original artists’ existing catalogs. Importantly, the few copies
pressed/cut of RW-011 ensure that these fragile, unreleased,
one-of-a-kind dub-plates are rescued on vinyl to “live on” as
part of roots reggae’s musical legacy.

We know of at least 20-30 additional unreleased Upsetter dubplates
and sincerely hope they will also be released someday.
We call on collectors to open the vaults and cut those dub-plates
on vinyl to enable preservation of this precious musical history.

For now, this LP is our humble contribution.
