Sewri, a small hamlet on the east coast of the island of Parel, one of the original seven islands that formed Mumbai. With a background of warehouses, terminals, toothpaste manufacturers and oil refineries, Sewri offers a refreshing view, namely a collection of pink flamingos that are looking for food.

Every year since the early 1990s, thousands of flamingos has descended into swampy stretch of mud in the area of Sewri. Flamingo is large and smaller arriving between December and February and stayed until just before the rainy season (May or June). Flamingo is usually interested in the area of shallow, tidal waters and mud with a stretch of warm water effluents from nearby factories. Stretch of mud is really a field of food for the flamingos that feed on microscopic blue-green algae that grows in polluted Mumbai port.


the best place to see the flamingo is from Fort Sewri originating from the 17th century. To get there, you can take the train track towards Sewri Port Central Railways, both from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus or Bandra.

Arriving at the station, exit through the east door and ask for directions to the castle, then a short walk away. The best time to visit is one hour of high tide, when the flamingos are near the beach.

Sewri Jetty, Sewri (East), Mumbai to see the Pink Beauties -- Flamingos and other water birds (Sewri Jetty is approachable by taking the road opposite Sewri Railway Station --East, on the Harbour Line, which is a 10 minute walk.
