The sounds of old alleys in Beijing, China

The calm sounds of dawn in the Hutongs of Beijing.

It's almost summer time and the sun rises early in Beijing. Most people are still sleeping in this quiet corner of hutong alleys and siheyuan courtyards, but the crows, sparrows and other urban birds are already up. They are not bothered by the distant wash of traffic sound and they happily go about their morning business.

I did not think it would be easy to find a quiet area in this sprawling metropolis. There is a staggering amount of traffic everywhere, and a lot of real estate has been developed and redeveloped to death. Fortunately these little residential areas have survived the pace of progress and still have some of the old time charm that you can witness in more rural parts of China. Additionally, it seems like the much dreaded sounds of traffic are way more subdued in this part of Asia, mostly due to the push to electrify the national fleet. Being close to motorways and only hearing soft whooshes was an eerie but welcome experience.
