Drawing on Glass with Soap: Lutyens, Proportion, and Perception

Описание к видео Drawing on Glass with Soap: Lutyens, Proportion, and Perception

Welcome to the Lutyens Trust America webinar, "Drawing on Glass with Soap: Lutyens, Proportion, and Perception," produced in collaboration with The Lutyens Trust in the UK. Hosted and moderated by Robin Prater, Executive Director of Lutyens Trust America, alongside artist Marcos Lutyens, this session brings together two esteemed panelists, Edward Ford and Oliver Cope.

The inspiration for this webinar arose from a conversation between Marcos Lutyens and LTA member Anupama Mann, discussing Edward Ford’s book The Details of Modern Architecture, which includes a chapter on Sir Edwin Lutyens. The book sparked a deeper exploration into Lutyens’ design work, and it was discovered that Oliver Cope had the book in his personal library and was well-versed in its content. This led to an engaging dialogue around Professor Ford’s ideas on Lutyens, which we are pleased to share today.

Edward R. Ford is Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia, where he continues to write and teach. His distinguished career includes appointments such as the 2021 Fay Jones Professor of Architecture at the University of Arkansas and the 2020 McDermott Visiting Professor of Architecture at the University of Texas, Austin. He is the author of The Details of Modern Architecture (volumes 1 and 2), The Architectural Detail, Five Houses, Ten Details, and his forthcoming book, Searching for Authenticity: Rustic Architecture in America, set to be released next spring. Professor Ford has also contributed to numerous professional journals and major architectural publications, and we are honored to have him join us today.

Oliver Cope is the Principal of Oliver Cope Architect, an award-winning firm specializing in classically American homes. Oliver holds degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Graduate School of Design, with teaching experience as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Cincinnati. He founded his New York-based firm in 1988 after gaining experience at prominent firms such as Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners. Licensed in several states, Oliver is a valued member of the Lutyens Trust America Board, and we are fortunate to have his expertise as part of this event.

During the webinar, attendees are encouraged to post questions in the Q&A box, which will be addressed at the end of the presentation. A recording of this session will be available on our website and YouTube channel.

Before passing the conversation to our distinguished panelists, we'd like to extend our gratitude to all participants, especially those who support Lutyens Trust America and The Lutyens Trust. Your involvement enables events like this to take place, and we always welcome new members to join our community.
