1930, a rancher named W.R. Settles hit oil on his land, and used some of the profits to build the Settles Hotel.

It cost $550,000 dollars to build, and remained open until 1982.

82 years since it was built, the historic hotel is nearing completion of a $30 million dollar renovation and restoration project.

In 1930 when the hotel was built, scaffolding had to be used to build it floor by floor.

There was a marble stairway, ironwork for the stair railings, and brass beds in all rooms.

82 years later. a 30 million dollar restoration project to reopen the West Texas icon, and it's a month away from opening.

Bill Cole is the Director of Operations. He tells CBS 7: "Everyone of the windows had to be professionally removed, transported to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, restored, and returned back to Big Spring and installed."

Brent Ryan is a former Big Spring native who decided to take on this project and restore the Settles.

There is one floor that is a trip back in time.

It is restored to the exact look from 1930, with the exception of a flat screen T.V. it is original.

Cole adds: "We have fixtures. We have lights and we have all the furniture, fixtures and equipment, and those types of things. We still have to complete the bathroom. On the historic floor so you will see different size rooms on the floor. It's original. If you go to the upper floors you will see a big difference, because we have taken 2 rooms and made it into one."

The upper floors have a more modern feel to meet today's needs.

The hotel was 140 rooms at one time, and is now at 65.

It will also have a restaurant, swimming pool and whirlpool outside, spa and beauty salon and the Pharmacy Bar.

The hotel is planning a lighting ceremony on December 28th, where they will light each floor one at a time, all the way to the top for the lighting of the Settles Hotel sign.

Training for the staff of the Settles begins in two weeks.
