After a severe storm hit the Midwest this week, Abbott Nutrition suspended production of EleCare infant formula at its plant in Sturgis, Michigan due to flooding, the company announced on Wednesday. Production and distribution of the new product will likely be delayed for several weeks but there is currently enough supply to meet demand until production restarts, Abbott said. "Abbott has suspended production of a special EleCare formula that is in progress to assess the damage caused by the storm and to clean and re-sanitize the plant," the company said in a statement. "We have notified the FDA and will carry out comprehensive testing together with independent third parties to ensure the factory is safe to resume production. After Abbott assessed the damage at Sturgis and reported the progress to the FDA, the FDA "will return to work at the facility to ensure that they can quickly resume producing quality, safe formula products." In terms of national figures, federal officials said it would be a few more weeks before formula supplies returned to normal levels. The Biden administration has relaxed import rules for foreign producers, flown in infant formula from Europe and implemented a federal emergency rule to prioritize US production.
