With over a billion mobile phones and more than 700 million internet subscribers, India’s mobile data consumption is already the highest in the world and the size of the digital economy in India is estimated to grow from $ 200 billion in 2017-18 to a staggering $ 1 trillion by 2025.

Needless to say, data centres play a crucial role in fostering a new phase of economic progress- and this is exciting, to say the least. The demand for data centres have gone up drastically in the course of the last one year- and organizations like IT services, BFSI, the healthcare sector, education and government agencies are increasingly dependent on cloud-based services to store their data.

As we see data centres increasingly becoming an ingrained part of the various industries, let us also be mindful of the implications this has on India’s energy resources. Data centres globally account for about 3% of energy use, equivalent to about 200 million tons of carbon emissions, which is expected to grow by over 30% every year, meaning they have the fastest-growing carbon footprint of any area within the IT sector.
