In English, there are many words for “#homes .” Some are small, some are big, and some are very special. Let’s learn the differences so you can use them correctly.

1. Apartment and Flat
Both words mean a home inside a big building.
• Apartment is mostly used in American English.
• Flat is mostly used in British English.
Example:
• “My aunt lives in an apartment in New York.”
• “We stayed in a flat when we visited London.”

2. Apartment Building and Block of Flats
These both mean a tall building that has many apartments inside.
• In American English: apartment building.
• In British English: block of flats.
Example:
• “Our new apartment building has ten floors.”
• “She lives in a block of flats near the park.”

3. Condominium (Condo)
A condominium is like an apartment building, but people own their apartments instead of renting them. Everyone shares the garden, hallways, stairs, and swimming pool.
Example:
• “We bought a condo with a small balcony.”

4. Studio Apartment / Studio Flat
This is a very small home, usually one main room plus a bathroom. The one room is used as a bedroom, living room, and kitchen together.
• Another word: Efficiency apartment.

5. Bedsit (Bed-sitting Room)
A bedsit is even smaller than a studio. There is no private bathroom inside. People use a shared bathroom in the building.

6. Duplex
This word has two meanings:
1. A house divided into two homes with a wall in the middle.
2. An apartment with two floors inside (upstairs and downstairs).

7. Penthouse
The penthouse is the top home in a tall building. It often has a great view and many luxuries, like a garden or swimming pool.

8. Basement Apartment
This home is below ground, under the building. It is often cheaper but darker and noisier.

10. Villa
