STORYLINE:

Rioters took to the streets of Macedonia's capital, Skopje, on Tuesday night.

People stood by as vehicles outside the offices of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) burned after being set alight by angry mobs.

There are reports the German embassy was broken into and fears other embassies might be attacked as well.

So far this has not happened.

But a McDonalds hamburger restaurant did have its windows smashed.

Whilst some parts of central Skopje were filled with the usual evening traffic and pedestrians, mobs were roaming other parts of the city.

Some could be seen carrying poles or metal bars.

Police presence was minimal, they were possibly surprised by the angry turn of events.

The rioting started after an angry protest by up to three-thousand Macedonians in front of the parliament buildings in the city.

The protesters were furious after the the worst fighting in months on Monday and more fierce clashes on Tuesday.

The fighting - between ethnic Albanian insurgents and government forces - took place in the northwestern city of Tetovo, 40 kilometres (25 miles) west of Skopje.
